Volunteer fire departments across New York can now apply for a fresh round of state-administered grant funding to boost their wildland firefighting efforts.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced it is accepting applications for $851,255 in Volunteer Fire Capacity grants. The program helps rural departments purchase essential gear like protective clothing, hoses, communication tools, and water delivery systems. The application deadline is Dec. 22.
“Volunteer fire departments are essential partners with DEC Forest Rangers in battling wildfires across the state,” said DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton. “This program helps support fire personnel with the resources they need to continue the vital work protecting our communities and State lands.”
The grants are funded by the U.S. Forest Service and run through DEC’s Division of Forest Protection. Departments that qualify can receive 50/50 matching funds up to $3,500 — an increase of $1,000 over last year. In 2024, the program awarded grants to 345 fire departments across New York.
To be eligible, departments must be at least 80% volunteer and serve a rural area. Grant funding must go directly toward wildland fire suppression — not general maintenance, building costs, or equipment for other uses like search and rescue.
Departments can apply online or request an application by calling DEC at (518) 402-8839, emailing, or visiting: https://dec.ny.gov/environmental-protection/public-safety/volunteer-fire-capacity-grants
