Cayuga County lawmakers are debating whether to bring back a 4% sales tax on home energy sources, three years after dropping it, according to The Citizen.
The tax—axed in 2022—once applied to gas, electric, oil, and more outside Auburn. Losing it cost the county about $1 million annually. Now, with a proposed 2026 budget facing an $11.2 million deficit, officials are reconsidering as they finalize cuts and new revenue options.
A vote is expected before the Dec. 20 budget deadline.
