Auburn YMCA staying downtown with $20M renovation

The Auburn YMCA is staying put—and getting a major upgrade.

Board members voted unanimously to keep the Y at its longtime home on 27 William Street and move forward with a full renovation of the facility. Leaders say the project will cost more than $20 million and take at least five years to complete.

After months of planning, site evaluations, and public input, the board determined that modernizing the current building would have the greatest impact. It means the Y will maintain its central role in downtown Auburn while expanding services for families, youth, and seniors across Cayuga County.

“This is a historic moment for the Auburn YMCA,” said CEO Scott Sincerbeaux. “Staying and investing in our home at 27 William Street is the most impactful path forward.”

Board Chairman Robert Scarbrough said every option was considered before making the final decision. “In the end, we unanimously agreed that renovating our current facility allows us to preserve our historic presence downtown while building a stronger, more vibrant future,” he said.

Next up: Planning, design, and fundraising. YMCA officials say members and the community will receive regular updates as the project moves ahead.
