Thanksgiving message highlights everyday heroes in the 54th District

As families prepare for Thanksgiving, a new holiday column from the 54th Senate District is shining a spotlight on the people whose everyday actions strengthen their communities — from young students to firefighters, veterans, and volunteers.

The column begins with a story about 5th grader Iva Christiano, who donated the full proceeds from the sale of her 4-H lamb, “Hero,” to Honor Flight Rochester. Inspired by her grandfather, a Vietnam veteran, Iva chose generosity over personal gain — a decision described as “an extraordinary gesture from a remarkable young woman.”

It also highlights 12-year-old Tanner Lamagna, a BMX racer whose serious injury became a rallying point for an entire community. Supporters near and far have embraced the message #TannerStrong, inspired by Tanner’s resilience and positive spirit.

First responders are also recognized for their unwavering commitment, especially during a major warehouse fire over Labor Day weekend. Crews from several counties worked through the night to contain the blaze, while residents showed up with bottled water, food, and support. The scene, the author writes, was a powerful reminder of neighborly care in action.

The column reflects on the sacrifices of military members and veterans, recalling a Veterans Day event in the Town of Chili. Community members lined the streets to cheer, wave flags, and hold signs. In one touching moment, a group of kindergarten basketball players paused practice to high-five each veteran passing by.

From restaurants serving free meals to businesses collecting winter clothes, the column notes that acts of service large and small are happening across the district.

“This Thanksgiving and every day, I appreciate the kindness and service of the people of the 54th District,” the author writes, adding that it’s that sense of community that inspired their own decision to serve in public office.

The message closes with a wish for a warm and peaceful holiday, and a renewed commitment to hope, service, and unity in the months ahead.
