Nevada man charged with DWI after near miss in Penn Yan

A traffic stop in Penn Yan turned into a DWI arrest after police say a Nevada man nearly struck one of their patrol vehicles.

Officers arrested 57-year-old Keith D. Newell of Pahrump, NV, after spotting him driving without headlights on Main Street. According to police, Newell then veered into oncoming traffic and came dangerously close to hitting a Penn Yan Police Department vehicle.

During the stop, officers said Newell showed clear signs of intoxication and failed a series of field sobriety tests. He was taken to the Yates County Jail, where he refused to take a chemical breath test.

Newell was charged with driving while intoxicated, no or inadequate lights, failure to keep right, and moving from a lane unsafely. He was processed at the police department and returned to the jail to await centralized arraignment.
