Grants boost youth and holiday programs at Newark’s Alex Eligh Center

The Alex Eligh Community Center in Newark just got a big boost, thanks to three new grants supporting youth mentorship, the arts, and holiday celebrations.

The funding includes a nearly $18,000 grant from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services to support the UPLIFT mentoring and tutoring program. Trained high school students, certified through MENTORNY, are now working one-on-one with local kids in grades 3–5, helping them build academic skills and social confidence.

“The UPLIFT Program began a month ago and has been off to a great start,” said Executive Director Braxton Guy. “This grant will help us strengthen and expand the program to reach even more youth.”

A second grant, for $1,500 from the Robert G. Boehmler Community Foundation, will send 30 Newark residents ages 18 to 25 to see the Garth Fagan Dance Company perform at the Smith Opera House next fall.

Finally, a $200 donation from del Lago Resort and Casino will help fund the Center’s “Home for the Holidays” celebration. Santa will arrive after Newark’s Lighted Parade on November 29 and greet families at the Center during a community party.

“The Community Center has been a part of shaping Newark’s youth for a very long time,” said Mayor Jonathan Taylor. “These programs continue to evolve and expand with the needs of the community.”
