A Broome County judge sentenced 22-year-old Matthew Bartosik to 50 years to life for murdering his uncle, according to WIVT.
Bartosik pleaded guilty after shooting Michael Lewis and injuring his cousin, Jessica, during a January attack in Conklin. He also fired at responding officers. Prosecutors say he reloaded a single-shot handgun and picked a lock to continue his assault.
Jessica says her father died protecting her by barricading a door to keep Bartosik out. In court, Bartosik apologized and claimed to have found faith in jail, but the judge called the crime one of the worst acts of depravity he’d seen.
