A crucial flood-control structure is getting long-overdue attention as the Mt. Morris Dam installs a new maintenance bulkhead for the first time in its 73-year history, according to RochesterFirst.
Engineers can now block the Genesee River from the upstream side to inspect and repair conduits that haven’t been accessed since the dam opened in 1952. Early inspections showed the interior was in better shape than expected, which could save future costs.
Officials say the dam has prevented more than $4 billion in flood damage and will keep receiving investments to extend its lifespan.
