Hobart hockey senior forward Kahlil Fontana tied a Hobart single-game record with four goals, leading the top-ranked Statesmen to a 6-1 victory over Skidmore in their SUNYAC opener at The Cooler. Junior defensemen Conor Lally and Bauer Morrissey each added three assists, while senior goaltender Mavrick Goyer made 17 saves to secure the win.
Skidmore’s lone goal came from Theo Angelopoulos, assisted by Tyler Fogu. Goalie Kyle Ozguri made 42 saves in his first collegiate start. Hobart dominated the game, outshooting the Thoroughbreds 48-18 and going 2-for-4 on the power play. Skidmore was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
The Statesmen struck first when Fontana scored off a rebound with assists from Morrissey and Lally. Skidmore quickly tied the game, but Heikki Virtanen scored 46 seconds later for Hobart’s eventual game-winning goal. Fontana then scored three more, including a power-play goal, to complete his four-goal night. Easton Ryan added an insurance goal late in the game.
With the victory, Hobart improved to 5-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in SUNYAC play, extending its home winning streak to an NCAA Division III record 56 games. Skidmore fell to 1-1-0 and 0-1-0 in conference action.
Hobart will conclude its three-game road trip Saturday, November 15, when it hosts Plattsburgh at The Cooler. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m.
