Ontario County is laying the groundwork for a post-landfill future with a new 2026–31 strategic plan, according to the Finger Lakes Times. With the county landfill set to close by the end of 2028, officials say the focus is shifting to waste diversion, recycling, and long-term sustainability.
The plan outlines six priorities: equal access to waste services, aligned legislation, post-closure strategy, increased education, funding support, and upgraded infrastructure. It includes actions like new composting facilities, reuse networks, digital dashboards for public oversight, and modernized recycling programs.
Survey responses from over 400 residents showed strong support for cutting landfill waste, expanding curbside services, and improving recycling education. County officials say early steps begin in 2026, with full system transitions planned through 2031.
