An extended personal care drive in Cayuga County has exceeded expectations — and made a big impact on neighbors in need.
The United Way of Cayuga County announced it collected 3,229 hygiene items through its 8th Annual Countywide Personal Care Drive, surpassing its goal of 3,000. The drive was extended more than two weeks beyond its original end date to ensure enough supplies could be collected for those struggling with basic needs.
Last month, CAP Cayuga/Seneca distributed 2,400 of those items to 19 local food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters. The remaining donations are now being delivered to four United Way-funded programs that provide hygiene support:
- Auburn Rescue Mission (Personal Care Items program)
- Harriet Tubman Liberation Foundation (Safe & Warm)
- SS Peter & John Episcopal Soup Kitchen
- The Salvation Army (Food Pantry program)
This year marks the first time the Harriet Tubman Liberation Foundation’s Safe & Warm program received items from the annual drive. Ashley Teucke, program coordinator, said the support couldn’t have come at a better time. “We really are grateful for this and hope that we can count on it every year,” she said.
Serving a growing need
Safe & Warm operates out of Westminster Presbyterian Church every Friday afternoon, offering a drop-in meal and a safe space for those in need. In addition to a hot meal, the center provides charging stations, beverages, and hygiene supplies — now bolstered by United Way donations.
“We’re seeing new faces at the drop-in center and we’re expecting more people,” said Teucke, noting a rising demand for basic items like shampoo, conditioner, and soap.
The United Way credited strong community support and local business sponsorships for making the extended effort a success. Next year’s Countywide Personal Care Drive will kick off August 6, 2026, during the Day of Caring.
