Medal of Honor hero to speak at FLCC Nov. 18

A Vietnam War veteran who earned the nation’s highest military honor will share his story in a live online talk hosted by Finger Lakes Community College.

Sgt. First Class Sammy Davis, a Medal of Honor recipient, will speak Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. as part of FLCC’s History, Culture and Diversity Series. The event will stream on the college website via Webex and on Finger Lakes TV. Details are available at flcc.edu/events.

Davis earned the Medal of Honor for his actions on Nov. 18, 1967, during a nighttime attack in Vietnam. Then a private first class, Davis was a cannoneer with Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 4th Artillery of the 9th Infantry Division.

When his unit came under heavy mortar and ground fire, Davis continued to fire a burning howitzer alone after his crew was wounded. Though injured and unable to swim, he crossed a river on an air mattress to save three fellow soldiers, then returned to fight until the enemy retreated.

His appearance is made possible by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. The series is led by FLCC history professor Robert Brown.
