Free haircuts honor New York veterans through DVS’s H.A.T.S. program

A fresh haircut is turning into a powerful way to honor those who’ve served — and it’s completely free.

Through the month of November, veterans across New York can receive complimentary haircuts and styling services thanks to the H.A.T.S. program, short for “Haircuts Across the State.” The initiative, run by the New York State Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS), is back for its second year with support from local barbers, stylists, and beauty schools.

A growing show of gratitude

Launched in 2024, the H.A.T.S. program has quickly become a statewide show of appreciation. Last year, hundreds of veterans received free grooming services at locations from Buffalo to Long Island. This year, even more partners are on board — including the International Barber & Beauty Institute, New Horizons Hair By Bianca, Great Clips, and Sharp Edgez Barber Institute.

“This program reminds veterans that self-care is part of service,” said DVS Commissioner Viviana M. DeCohen. “A fresh haircut may seem small, but it is truly a big way that New York State honors their dignity and confidence.”

More than a haircut

DVS leaders say the program is about more than just a cut — it’s about connection.

“This is care, community, and conversation,” said Dr. Lessie Branch, Special Assistant for Community Engagement. “We see veterans leave not only looking great but feeling seen and truly appreciated.”

Executive Deputy Commissioner Joel Evans added, “Each year, H.A.T.S. grows thanks to the generosity of community partners. It’s a simple way local businesses can show real appreciation.”
