Macaroni and tuna salads recalled in New York over listeria concerns

A popular deli salad company is recalling two of its products after state inspectors found contamination during routine testing.

Made Fresh Salads Inc., based in Bay Shore, has issued a recall for all lots of its macaroni salad and tuna deluxe salad due to potential listeria contamination, according to a release from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.

The recall affects 5 lb. and 30 lb. containers of the following brands and products:

  • LoBoy Macaroni Salad
  • LoBoy Tuna Deluxe Salad
  • Made Fresh Salad Macaroni Salad
  • Made Fresh Salad Tuna Deluxe Salad

The products were distributed statewide to retail stores. So far, no illnesses have been reported, but listeria can pose a serious risk — especially to young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

According to the release, the issue was discovered after inspectors tested 5 lb. containers of the LoBoy salads and found traces of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious infections.

Symptoms of listeria infection may include high fever, headaches, nausea, and diarrhea. In pregnant women, the illness can lead to miscarriages or stillbirths.

Consumers are urged to return the recalled salads to the place of purchase for a full refund. For questions, customers can contact the company at (718) 765-0082.

Production of the affected products has been suspended.
