Auburn man charged with welfare fraud, grand larceny

Deputies arrested a 55-year-old Auburn man earlier this month on felony welfare fraud charges, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Robert W. Dreher was taken into custody on October 15 on an outstanding warrant issued by Auburn City Court. The arrest followed an investigation by the county’s Department of Social Services Case Integrity Unit.

Investigators say Dreher failed to report income, which led to an overpayment of public benefits. He was charged with three felonies: grand larceny in the fourth degree, welfare fraud in the fourth degree, and misuse of food stamps.

Dreher was processed at the Public Safety Building and held at the county jail until his arraignment. He appeared in court on October 16 and was released on his own recognizance.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office or leave a tip anonymously through the county’s SaferWatch app.
