Schuyler County Sheriff Kevin Rumsey seeks re-election, runs unopposed

Schuyler County Sheriff Kevin Rumsey is running unopposed in the upcoming general election, positioning him for a second term after first winning the office in 2021.

While the race is uncontested, Rumsey is encouraging voters to show their support at the polls this November.

“Serving this community has been one of the great privileges of my life,” Rumsey said. “We’ve worked hard to modernize our operations and improve public safety across the board.”

During his first term, Rumsey led several major upgrades across the department:

  • 9-1-1 Center improvements with new staffing, supervision, and tools like Text-to-911 and Prepared Live.
  • Transparency measures, including in-car and body-worn cameras for all patrol deputies.
  • A Drone Unit now assists in finding missing persons and criminal suspects.
  • The Navigation Division expanded public boater safety training and lake patrols.
  • The K-9 Division remains active with demonstrations and regular training.
  • In the jail, every Corrections Officer is now certified to carry a taser and wears a body camera—firsts for the agency.
  • Monthly in-service training programs for deputies and corrections officers.
  • Launch of the Schuyler County Sheriff’s App with real-time alerts, safety info, and access to victim services.

“These upgrades bring the Sheriff’s Office in line with today’s standards for transparency and accessibility,” Rumsey said, calling the app a long-overdue tool for public communication.

Looking ahead

Rumsey says his second term will focus on growing these efforts—rolling out new initiatives, deepening community partnerships, and continuing to invest in training and equipment.

“We’re not slowing down,” he said. “Our goal is to keep building a stronger, more responsive, and more connected Sheriff’s Office.”
