Marketplace health insurance in Tompkins County could more than triple next year if federal subsidies expire, according to The Ithaca Voice. Without action from Congress, some residents may pay over $850 more per month—worse than anywhere else in the state.
The potential cuts stem from a pandemic-era tax credit set to end unless renewed. About 1,000 Tompkins residents rely on the marketplace, mostly middle-income workers without job-based coverage.
Even if subsidies stay, rising premiums could still hike costs. New York’s average marketplace plan is already the 5th most expensive nationwide at $790 per month.
