Cayuga County marks School Bus Safety Week

Local law enforcement is reminding drivers to slow down and stay alert as part of National School Bus Safety Week, running October 20–24.

According to the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, more than 2.3 million children in New York ride over 50,000 school buses each year. State law makes it illegal to pass a stopped school bus with red lights flashing, no matter which direction you’re coming from.

Cayuga County officials say drivers should come to a full stop at least 20 feet from the bus. They also urge drivers to watch for kids crossing the road or running to catch their bus. Buses must also stop at all railroad crossings.

Police from Auburn, New York State Police, and the Sheriff’s Office are all supporting the campaign to keep roads safer.
