Newark sets aside Nov. 1 to honor everyday heroes

The Village of Newark is shining a spotlight on community spirit this fall.

Leaders officially declared November 1 as “Extra Mile Day,” a nationwide event recognizing people who go above and beyond in service, volunteerism, and daily life. The village board voted in favor of the proclamation, and Mayor Jonathan Taylor made it official.

The day encourages individuals to reflect on their own efforts — and to celebrate those who inspire others by consistently “going the extra mile.” From volunteers to neighbors helping neighbors, the goal is to recognize the impact of small, selfless actions.

In his proclamation, Mayor Taylor noted that Newark thrives when its residents give wholeheartedly to their families, communities, and personal goals. The village also acknowledged the national mission of Extra Mile America, which aims to create 550 cities that take part in this annual celebration.

November 1 marks an opportunity for Newark residents to act — and to say thank you — in ways that lift the whole community.
