Farmington woman charged in welfare fraud case

A woman from Farmington is facing felony charges after deputies say she illegally collected nearly $3,000 in public benefits.

Leah R. Cross, 35, was arrested after a joint investigation by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Welfare Fraud Unit and the Department of Social Services, according to a news release.

Officials say Cross failed to disclose that her husband was working while she was receiving SNAP benefits. She also allegedly left out that information on an application for HEAP assistance.

As a result, investigators say she fraudulently received $2,925 in SNAP benefits.

Cross is charged with offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, welfare fraud in the fourth degree, and grand larceny in the fourth degree. She was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Lyons Town Court.
