Wayne County’s shift to a fully professional EMS system is setting a new standard for mental health care among first responders, according the Times of Wayne County.
The county replaced 15 volunteer-run ambulance services with four staffed centers and now offers quiet rooms, mental health visits, and better pay. EMTs say the job’s trauma still lingers, but support has improved.
Officials say the system isn’t for profit — but it must stay financially sustainable amid rising costs and burnout risks.
