Nearly every New York college scored an F in a national free speech survey, according to a new FIRE report.
Out of 19 schools ranked, only Syracuse University earned above an F, landing a D-. Columbia and Barnard were the worst nationwide. The study found 73% of students believe shouting down speakers is sometimes acceptable, and 34% were okay with using violence to stop speech.
Overall, FIRE says New York’s campus climate mirrors the national trend: less tolerance for opposing views and more self-censorship. Ten major free speech controversies hit New York schools just this year.
