New York has already hired 150 displaced federal workers and is ready to bring on more as the government shutdown stretches into its second week, according to Spectrum News 1. State agencies have received over 12,000 applications from laid-off employees since October 1.
The hiring push follows President Trump’s warning of more terminations if the shutdown drags on. Union leaders call the mass firings illegal and filed a lawsuit over the weekend to block them.
Meanwhile, state employee advocates want reforms to Tier 6 pensions to help retain talent and cut overtime costs — especially as displaced federal workers look for long-term stability.
