Judge backs Nassau ban on trans athletes

A New York judge upheld Nassau County’s law banning transgender women from female sports teams at county-run parks, according to the Associated Press. The ruling came after a lawsuit by the Long Island Roller Rebels, who argued the law was discriminatory.

Judge Bruce Cozzens said the ban aims to protect women and girls but still allows transgender athletes to join coed leagues. The NYCLU, which filed the suit, vowed to appeal, calling the ruling harmful and unlawful.

The ban was first introduced by County Executive Bruce Blakeman via executive order but later passed by the GOP-led Legislature after legal challenges.
