Health insurance costs could spike — or vanish — for 220,000 New Yorkers if Congress doesn’t strike a budget deal before Oct. 1, according to The Journal News. A standoff over Obamacare subsidies threatens to gut financial aid that’s helped millions afford coverage since 2021.
If the enhanced subsidies expire, 80,000 New Yorkers could lose coverage entirely, while 140,000 would see premiums jump by 38% — or up to $3,200 more per couple in some regions. Democrats, led by Sen. Chuck Schumer, want the subsidies renewed. But House Republicans passed a short-term plan that leaves them out.
With neither side budging, a shutdown could hit next week — and drag health care costs with it.
