Push to pass Daniel’s Law gains momentum

Supporters of Daniel’s Law rallied in cities like Rochester on Saturday—what would’ve been Daniel Prude’s birthday—according to Spectrum News 1.

The bill would send trained crisis teams, not police, to respond to mental health or substance use emergencies. It was introduced after Prude died in Rochester police custody in 2020 during a mental health episode. Despite clearing a state Senate committee, the bill hasn’t advanced.

Advocates say the need is urgent as mental health services face federal cuts. New York has budgeted $6 million for pilot programs, but backers like Sen. Samra Brouk want more investment—and faster action.
