La Niña could bring cold, snowy winter to New York

A warmer fall is likely for New York, but La Niña is on the way—and winter could get stormy, according to forecasters.

Forecasters say there’s a 71% chance La Niña develops by December. That typically means colder temps and more snow in the Northeast, especially upstate. Cities like Buffalo and Syracuse could see heavy lake-effect snow if the Great Lakes stay unfrozen.

Downstate, La Niña often brings more rain than snow, but surprise snowstorms can still happen when cold snaps and coastal storms align.
