Auburn man charged after trail cameras stolen in Sennett

A 67-year-old Auburn man was arrested Friday morning after allegedly stealing trail cameras in the Town of Sennett—only to be caught on video by the cameras themselves.

Deputies from the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a larceny complaint around 9:16 a.m. on East Genesee Street Road, near the Sennett Meadows Apartment complex.

The victim told deputies that several trail cameras had been taken from trees where they were mounted for hunting season. Unbeknownst to the suspect, the cameras had wireless technology that sent video and photos directly to the owner in real time.

By 10:09 a.m., deputies had identified and arrested Phillip J. Daniels, 67, of Auburn. He was found in possession of the stolen cameras, and the entire incident had been recorded.

Daniels was charged with petit larceny, a misdemeanor, and released with an appearance ticket. He is scheduled to appear in Town of Sennett Court on September 24 at 7 p.m.
