New York’s attorney general is investigating a top law firm for targeting friends and family of nursing home residents with debt lawsuits, according to Politico.
Abrams Fensterman allegedly sued people who didn’t owe money — including relatives of deceased residents — to collect unpaid nursing home bills. Letitia James’ office suspects the practice may violate consumer protection laws and deceptive business statutes.
The firm denies wrongdoing and is fighting a subpoena, but the case signals a broader crackdown on aggressive debt collection tied to long-term care.
