Two people from New Jersey and Pennsylvania were killed when a tractor trailer rear-ended their car on Interstate 86 early Sunday, according to New York State Police.
Troopers said the crash happened around 4:30 a.m. on Sept. 8 in the Town of Nichols, Tioga County.
The car and tractor trailer were both heading east on I-86 when the tractor trailer struck the rear of the car.
Both people inside the car were pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police identified the victims on Sept. 9 as 45-year-old Frank J. Dempaire of Reading, Pennsylvania, and 45-year-old Elize Carlos of Newark, New Jersey.
Troopers did not say which victim was driving. The driver of the tractor trailer was not hurt.
The crash shut down the eastbound lanes of I-86 for several hours while troopers investigated and cleared the scene.
Police said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
