Newark youth center lands major mental health grant

A major state investment is coming to Newark to support local teens and young adults facing mental health challenges.

Delphi Rise has been awarded $250,000 a year for the next five years to launch a Youth Safe Space at the Alex Eligh Community Center. The funding is part of a $7.5 million statewide initiative announced by Governor Kathy Hochul to expand peer-led mental health programs across New York.

The programs are designed for youth ages 12 to 24 and offer non-clinical support in welcoming, inclusive spaces. They aim to reduce isolation, strengthen peer connections, and break down barriers to care.

Local leaders say the investment will make a big difference.

“We’re grateful that this important service can be provided to the youth in our community,” said Newark Mayor Jonathan Taylor. “They are the Village’s future.”

Braxton Guy, Director of the Alex Eligh Community Center, said the new program builds on years of outreach and events focused on youth engagement.

“This investment helps us provide even more resources and safe environments for teens and young adults in Newark to thrive,” he said.

Delphi Rise President and CEO Jennifer Cathy called the award an honor and said her team looks forward to creating a space where young people “will find hope, connection, and the support they need.”

Other Youth Safe Spaces funded through the initiative will open in Albany, Queens, and Cicero.
