The New York Mets unraveled defensively Thursday night, committing three errors that led to five unearned runs in a 7-4 loss to the Miami Marlins at Citi Field just a day after sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Mets jumped on the board early when Brandon Nimmo doubled in two runs in the first inning. Pete Alonso tied the game in the fifth with his 30th home run of the season, a two-run blast that gave him 108 RBI.Â
Ryne Stanek navigated a tricky sixth inning, but trouble struck in the seventh when Gregory Soto singled and Alonso committed an error. Agustin Ramirez followed with a hit that got past Lindor, and Nimmo misplayed the ball in center, allowing a run to score. A broken-bat grounder and another defensive miscue added two more before Kevin Herget finally contained the damage. All three runs were unearned.
The Mets offense mustered just seven hits and went 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position, stranding seven. Hot bats like Mark Vientos and Brett Baty cooled off, combining for a 1-for-8 night with four strikeouts.
