Nunda wins $256K grant to extend Route 408 water main

The Village of Nunda has received a $256,652 grant from the New York State County Infrastructure Program to extend its water main along Route 408.

Village officials say the project will ease pressure on aging water lines, boost service reliability, and support future demand — especially from a planned sprinkler system at Once Again Nut Butter, the village’s largest employer.

“The sprinkler system will be critical for fire safety, but it would put heavy stress on our existing water main if installed today,” said Nunda Mayor Jack Morgan. “By extending the line, we can relieve some of the pressure on the system, prevent breaks and provide better service for the 538 combined businesses and residents who will be affected by this project.”

The extension will also strengthen the village’s reservoir-fed water supply and reduce the risk of costly service disruptions. Officials have not yet set a start date for construction.

Livingston County’s Office of Economic Development helped the village secure the funding. Economic Development Director Bill Bacon said the program highlights how local investments can meet both community and business needs.

Nunda’s water system serves roughly 1,600 residents and processed over 42 million gallons of water last year, according to its 2024 report.
