David Peterson bounced back in a big way Tuesday night, tossing eight innings of one-run ball while the New York Mets’ offense erupted for four home runs in an 8-1 road victory over the Washington Nationals, extending their win streak to three.
After a quiet opening trip through the order, the Mets broke out in the third against Nationals starter Jake Irvin. Francisco Lindor doubled and Juan Soto walked before Brandon Nimmo lined an RBI single to center. Jeff McNeil followed with a two-run double, and Mark Vientos capped the rally by turning on a hanging curveball for a two-run homer, his ninth of the season. By the end of the inning, New York held a commanding 5-0 lead. Brett Baty added to the cushion in the sixth with a towering solo shot to the second deck in right-center, and Soto went deep the following inning against reliever Konnor Pilkington. McNeil closed the scoring with a ninth-inning solo blast.
Peterson was the story on the mound. The left-hander faced the minimum through four innings, striking out four while working efficiently. He escaped a jam in the sixth to preserve a lengthy scoreless streak against Washington, but a run in the eighth snapped his stretch at 25.1 innings. Still, he finished with 10 strikeouts, scattering six hits and one walk across 96 pitches. Ryne Stanek worked a clean ninth to secure the win.
