Fire heavily damages home in Phelps

A house fire Saturday evening tore through the roof of a home in Phelps, leaving it uninhabitable and sending emergency crews from three fire departments racing to the scene.

Homeowners Ron and Joanne Koomen were not home when the fire broke out around 7:24 p.m. at 42 William Street, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrived alongside Phelps, Oaks Corners, and Clifton Springs firefighters to find flames shooting from the south side of the house. Phelps Ambulance also responded, though no injuries were reported.

Crews were able to put out the fire, but the roof sustained major damage. Code enforcement later deemed the home unfit to live in. The American Red Cross stepped in to help the couple with temporary accommodations.

Investigators from the Ontario County Fire Coordinator’s Office are still looking into what caused the fire. Officials say there’s no indication that foul play was involved.

William Street remained shut down during the response.
