A lit cigarette is being blamed for a fire that left a Manchester home uninhabitable Saturday morning, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and multiple fire departments responded around 11:32 a.m. to 12 Howard Street, where flames had broken out in a second-floor bedroom. The home belongs to the Shultz family.
Fire crews from Manchester, Shortsville, and Clifton Springs worked to put out the blaze, with support from Finger Lakes Ambulance. Investigators say the fire started in the doorway of the upstairs bedroom after a cigarette was improperly extinguished.
No one was hurt, but the house was declared unfit to live in by Manchester Code Enforcement. The American Red Cross offered assistance, but the homeowners declined.
