Hochul: Watch out for back-to-school scams this month

Governor Kathy Hochul is urging New Yorkers to be on guard for scams as families gear up for the second biggest shopping season of the year.

With inflation and looming federal tariffs driving up prices—and pushing parents to start early—scammers are looking to cash in on the rush. Hochul said deals that seem “too good to be true” often are, and falling for them could lead to financial loss or stolen personal information.

The state’s Division of Consumer Protection says common tactics include fake websites, phishing emails about missed deliveries, bogus test-prep calls, and counterfeit coupons on social media. Officials recommend using credit cards for online purchases, checking seller policies carefully, and verifying the legitimacy of deals before clicking or buying.

Parents and students are also urged to safeguard personal data, especially when registering for after-school activities or applying for financial aid. The state’s consumer helpline and website offer more tips and mediation help for those who suspect they’ve been scammed.
