72-hour NYC-to-LA train proposed for 2026 debut

A private rail company is pushing for a new coast-to-coast train route that would carry passengers and truckers from New York to Los Angeles in under 72 hours, according to the USA TODAY.

Delaware-based AmeriStarRail unveiled the “Transcontinental Chief,” aiming to launch it by May 10, 2026—just ahead of the U.S. Semiquincentennial and World Cup. The route would replace two Amtrak lines, using Hoboken Terminal instead of Penn Station due to tunnel limits, and offer amenities for both passengers and long-haul truckers.

The company is seeking Amtrak’s cooperation but hasn’t yet secured agreements with host railroads. If approved, the train would offer sleeper cabins, car transport, and stops from L.A. to D.C.
