A gunman opened fire in a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper Monday evening, killing a New York City police officer and four civilians before being shot dead by responding officers. Authorities have identified the suspect as Shane Tamura, a 39-year-old man from Las Vegas, Nevada.

The shocking attack unfolded just before 6:30 p.m. inside 350 Park Avenue, sending workers and bystanders scrambling for safety in one of the busiest buildings in New York’s financial district.

What We Know About the Gunman

Shane Tamura, described as a quiet but reclusive figure by acquaintances in Las Vegas, reportedly arrived in New York City over the weekend. According to investigators, he had no known ties to the building or his victims and may have acted alone in what police are calling a targeted but still unexplained mass shooting.

While a motive has not yet been publicly disclosed, sources close to the investigation say Tamura may have had a history of mental health issues.

Victims of the Shooting

The attack claimed the lives of five individuals, including a NYPD Officer. He was fatally wounded while attempting to evacuate civilians from the lobby. Four others — three men and one woman — were also killed during the rampage.

At least two additional people were injured and are currently receiving treatment at local hospitals.

Investigators are reviewing digital evidence, including Tamura’s phone and online activity, to better understand what triggered the deadly outburst. Authorities have not yet ruled out ideological or extremist motivations.

Who Was Shane Tamura?

According to multiple reports, Tamura was originally from Hawaii but spent the last decade in Las Vegas, where he reportedly worked in information technology. He had no prior criminal record in Nevada, and his name was not in any federal watchlists.

A neighbor in Las Vegas told News 3 Las Vegas, “He kept to himself. You’d never guess he was capable of this.”
