After months of speculation, Rep. Mike Lawler announced he will not run for New York governor in 2026, according to Spectrum News. Instead, the Hudson Valley Republican will seek reelection to his House seat, citing the importance of maintaining the GOP’s narrow majority in Congress.
Lawler said the decision was best for his family and constituents. His announcement leaves Rep. Elise Stefanik as the GOP’s most visible potential contender for the governor’s race, with recent polls showing her leading Lawler among party voters.
Governor Kathy Hochul responded sharply online, accusing Lawler of lacking the courage to face her. Lawler, first elected in 2022, currently represents New York’s 17th Congressional District.
