Seneca Meadows landfill near capacity, PFAS waste raises concern

Seneca Meadows, New York’s largest landfill, is nearing capacity while continuing to send over 24 million gallons of chemically contaminated leachate to Buffalo’s Bird Island Wastewater Plant, which doesn’t treat for PFAS, according to its 2024 report reviewed by RochesterFirst.

Environmental advocates warn that PFAS, linked to cancer and other health risks, is likely in the untreated waste. The landfill has only eight months of space left at current intake levels and is seeking a permit to expand operations through 2040.

The report adds fuel to growing opposition from residents and groups concerned about pollution, odor, and long-term groundwater safety.
