New York is backing off its aggressive climate targets, with state officials signaling a slower shift to renewable energy, according to Spectrum News. Governor Kathy Hochul said current economic realities mean the state can’t meet earlier climate deadlines without burdening ratepayers.
The state’s draft energy plan, discussed by NYSERDA President Doreen Harris, now includes continued fossil fuel use for up to 15 more years. While the 2040 zero-emission goal remains on paper, delays in clean energy deployment and federal challenges have reshaped the strategy.
The revised plan—focused on grid reliability, affordability, and equity—will be released this summer for public comment in the fall.
