Corning council delays mayoral term vote again

Corning’s City Council tabled a proposal Monday night to extend the mayoral term from two to four years, just nine months after voters rejected the same change, according to WENY News. Councilmember Alison Hunt led the push to delay, citing concerns about ignoring recent voter sentiment.

While some officials argue a four-year term would allow mayors to better execute long-term plans, Hunt said pushing the change now could confuse voters during this year’s mayoral race. The council unanimously agreed to postpone the discussion to allow for more public input.

Workshops are planned to explain how other similarly sized cities have adopted longer terms. Council members hope to better inform residents before deciding whether to revisit the proposal next year.
