Finger Lakes launches ‘Healthy Habits’ campaign to fight chronic disease

Health officials across the Finger Lakes Region have launched a new media campaign to combat rising rates of cancer and chronic disease by promoting simple, lifelong habits that start in childhood.

The “Healthy Habits Grow With Us” campaign, announced July 1, is a joint effort among eight county health departments—Chemung, Livingston, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates—under the leadership of the Pivital Public Health Partnership.

The campaign focuses on four key behaviors: sun safety, healthy eating, physical activity, and routine medical checkups. It encourages parents to model these habits early, aiming to reduce preventable health issues in future generations.

“By focusing on simple, achievable habits when our kids are small, we’re setting them up for healthier futures,” said Michele Foster, Executive Director of Pivital Public Health Partnership.

Local data shows the region faces cancer and chronic disease rates that exceed state targets in several areas. Public health leaders stress the impact of modifiable risk factors like diet, exercise, sun exposure, and healthcare access on long-term wellness.

The campaign will roll out practical resources, tips, and events throughout the summer. More information is available through the Ontario County Public Health website.
