Ontario County delays vote on Seneca landfill expansion

The Ontario County Board’s Planning & Environmental Quality Committee postponed taking a stance on Seneca Meadows’ proposed landfill expansion, according to the Finger Lakes Times. A resolution introduced by Geneva Supervisor Mark Venuti opposed the plan, citing odor issues, truck traffic, and concerns about regional tourism and environmental impact.

Seneca Meadows seeks to expand by 47 million cubic yards, raising the landfill’s height to 350 feet and extending operations to 2040. A 2016 Seneca Falls law aims to ban landfilling after 2025, though legal challenges continue.

Some committee members urged caution, wanting to review resolutions from other counties before voting. Meanwhile, the board approved applying for a grant to fund an organics management plan for Ontario County’s landfill.
