New ‘Nimbus’ COVID variant detected in New York

A new COVID-19 strain, NB.1.8.1—dubbed “Nimbus”—is quickly becoming one of the most common in the U.S., now accounting for 37% of cases, according to the CDC. First identified in China, the highly transmissible variant has spread to at least 22 countries and multiple U.S. states, including New York.

Though not linked to more severe illness, Nimbus has a standout symptom: intense sore throat described as “razor-blade throat fatigue.” Other signs include cough, fever, muscle aches, and congestion. Vaccines remain effective and widely available at pharmacies and clinics.

Testing is also accessible across New York, including at urgent care centers and via at-home kits. Health officials encourage staying up to date with vaccinations.
