Just hours after securing the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani found himself the target of a wave of Islamophobic rhetoric from Republican members of Congress, according to Spectrum News. Some lawmakers criticized his political ties, while others attacked his religion and past.
Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles demanded Mamdani, a naturalized citizen, be stripped of citizenship and deported. He called Mamdani antisemitic, referencing rap lyrics from 2017. Others posted inflammatory images and messages, drawing sharp condemnation from Democrats.
Even GOP Rep. Nicole Malliotakis distanced herself, labeling the comments unproductive. Prominent Democrats, including Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer, denounced the attacks, calling them hateful and un-American, regardless of political disagreement.
