Steuben County inmate charged in armed robbery and gang assault

A Steuben County jail inmate is now facing a slate of serious charges stemming from a violent robbery last fall in the Town of Dansville.

Deputies arrested 22-year-old Zachary J.D. Courtney on Friday at the county jail, executing an arrest warrant related to the September 2024 incident. Courtney is accused of using a firearm to forcibly steal property valued over $1,000 and assaulting a victim alongside at least two other individuals.

According to Sheriff Jim Allard, Courtney has been charged with six felonies: robbery in the first degree, criminal use of a firearm in the first degree, assault in the first degree, gang assault in the second degree, grand larceny in the fourth degree, and conspiracy in the third degree.

Courtney was arraigned in Centralized Arraignment Court and returned to custody following the proceeding.
