Fourth of July holiday travel weather: Storms, heat and comfort coast to coast

As millions prepare for Independence Day celebrations, AccuWeather’s long-range forecast outlines a complex weather pattern across the United States. From beachgoers on the East Coast to families in the Midwest and hikers out West, the holiday forecast brings both opportunities and challenges.

Northeast: A comfortable break from the heat

After a record-shattering June heat wave, the Northeast will enjoy a significant cooldown. Temperatures will be lower, and humidity levels are expected to drop to well below July averages.

  • Cities from Boston to New York City and Washington, D.C. are expected to remain dry throughout July 4.
  • Some light showers could brush upstate New York and northern New England but are unlikely to disrupt evening fireworks.

Midwest: Thunderstorms could dampen holiday plans

The central United States may see disrupted festivities due to thunderstorms and possible severe weather.

  • Thunderstorms are possible in Minneapolis, Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Kansas City.
  • AccuWeather predicts one or more complexes of storms could develop over the northern and central Plains, moving eastward into the Midwest during the holiday.

West: Scorching temperatures and dry conditions

If heat is what you’re after, the West will not disappoint.

  • Highs in the deserts of the Southwest are expected to soar into the 90s and low 100s.
  • The Plains and interior Southeast will also see temperatures in the upper 80s to mid-90s.
  • Western states may face firework restrictions due to local drought conditions. Always check local laws before lighting any fireworks.

Southeast and Gulf Coast: Eyes on tropical development

AccuWeather hurricane experts are monitoring areas in the Gulf of Mexico and off the Southeast coast for possible tropical rainstorms between July 4–7.

  • Any formation could bring heavy rainfall and rough surf from northern Florida to the Carolinas.
  • There is a low but notable risk of tropical development, which could affect coastal travel and beach plans.

Southwest & Pacific Northwest: Mixed conditions

  • The North American monsoon will bring afternoon thunderstorms to New Mexico, western Texas, Colorado, and eastern Arizona.
  • In the Pacific Northwest, occasional showers may dampen western Washington and northwestern Oregon at various points on July 4.

Beach and surf outlook

  • Surf temperatures along the Gulf and southern Atlantic coasts are warm and swimmable, ranging into the 80s.
  • New England and Pacific coastlines will feature cooler waters, typically between the upper 40s and low 60s.
