Florida man indicted for powder scare targeting NY AG

A Florida resident is facing federal charges for allegedly mailing a threatening letter with white powder to New York Attorney General Letitia James, according to the Department of Justice. The letter, sent in February 2024, was believed to simulate a biological threat.

The suspect, 63-year-old Henry Garcia of Vero Beach, was indicted after authorities determined the powder, though nonhazardous, was meant to intimidate. Federal prosecutors condemned the act as a serious threat to public officials and vowed aggressive prosecution.

Garcia could face up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. He remains in custody in Florida ahead of a June 30 detention hearing.
